Kitchen drains clog more than any other in the house — grease, food bits, and soap buildup form stubborn blockages. Try these in order.
Method 1: Boiling water (free)
Boil a full kettle. Pour slowly down the drain in 2-3 stages. Often dissolves grease clogs. Avoid on PVC pipes.
Method 2: Baking soda + vinegar ($1)
1/2 cup baking soda, then 1 cup white vinegar. Cover the drain. Wait 15 minutes. Flush with hot tap water.
Method 3: Cup plunger
Use a flat-bottomed CUP plunger, not a toilet plunger. Fill sink to cover the cup. Plug the overflow and other drain. Plunge firmly 10-15 times.
Method 4: Clean the P-trap (15 min)
Bucket under the curved pipe. Unscrew slip nuts. Empty trap. 90% of kitchen clogs are right here.
Method 5: Drain snake
$20-30 hand-crank snake. Feed past the trap, crank, pull back.
